How can you help feed your healthy gut flora?

Science is now finally discovering the benefits to be had from healthy gut bugs and microbes. About time they caught up with what many of us have been saying for years.

It really only makes sense because the immune system lines our digestive system and when we have healthy and happy gut microbes then they stimulate the immune system to carry out its functioning as it is designed to do. The bugs chat to the cells involved in the immune system and they create a symbiotic relationship where each benefits each other.
When our gut bugs are happy we absorb more nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. This helps us make the most of the cancer preventing foods such a blueberries, cabbage, broccoli, red grapes and citrus fruits.
When we have poor levels of gut bugs the communication channels breakdown. This is called gut microbe dysfunction or dysregulation.

There are many factors that can disrupt these ‘gut bug – immune’ chats. Antibiotic overuse, poor diet, fungal overgrowth (Candida), excessive alcohol and caffeine, parasites and infected foods, processed foods, chemicals, high sugar diets, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and diets high in hormone fed meats would be the worst offenders.
Once our gut becomes inflamed it then becomes very porous, much more than it is meant to be. A porous gut allows substances to pass through that usually do not pass through. Food proteins, bacteria, fungi, metals and toxic substances flood straight into the blood stream. Our blood becomes overloaded with poisons and toxins and this will present its self in a number of ways, the most common one being all skins conditions such as eczema and acne. You can send the end result of this becomes conditions such as allergies and irritable bowel problems.

This awakening from the science world has led to new research showing that chronic inflammation conditions such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes might well begin with dysfunctional gut bugs. Hurrah! Thanks the Goddess for science. We knew they would catch up one day.

This is why with any illness it is always important to start with the gut. Gut healing is of utmost importance.

What can we do?
We could take probiotics. We have so many probiotics on the market which ones do we choose?
Certain brands of probiotics can be made from GMO corn or can be watered down or contain dead fillers to bulk out the products. It is hard to know what to take. We all have our own unique equation of bowel flora, this is why I love using kefir for my family, as it grows at home in our own environment. You can read more about kefir in my kefir blog.
As for probiotics, choose a brand that is in powder form, is refrigerated and is free from binders, fillers and bulkers. When you take it, it wants to give you the sensation that things are happening in there, if this does not happen then try another brand. Remember to keep your probiotics in the fridge and to take a course of them every time you take some antibiotics.
Remember that your body always knows best and it will tell you when it feels good.
