Bupleurum is a member of the Apiaceae family of plants and has been a staple of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for over 2,000 years. It is referred to as “Chai Hu”
Bupleurum is an important Chinese tonic herb for the liver and circulatory system that is not widely used. As with most traditional Chinese herbs, bupleurum is rarely used alone, but is often combined with ginseng, ginger and combined with peony to treat menstrual problems, with bitter orange peel for irregularity or loss of appetite, with bacial skullcap for chills and fever.
Bupleurum demonstrates antiviral properties. Bupleurum has been shown to inactivate enveloped viruses including measles and herpes, but had no effect on non-enveloped viruses such as polio. Bupleurum may be helpful in the inactivation of certain hepatitis viruses.
Modern science is investigating the effects of Bupleurum on liver enzymes, mood, blood lipids, and immunity.
Bupleurum acts as an anti-inflammatory. The saikosaponins found in bupleurum stimulate corticosteroid production, thus increasing the anti-inflammatory effects.
