Zea mays, the botanical name for corn comes from Greek, meaning to live. Mays comes from Spanish, the same word as a term in a native Mexican language meaning "mother," or "mother of life", reflecting the central importance of corn in the lives of early Americans.
Cornsilk has been used for almost anything related to the urinary system. It has a relaxing effect and has been used by people to assist in cases of frequent urination and scalding or burning urination. It has also been used to relieve irritation and improve urine flow and elimination. Some believe it may help with kidney stones as well.
Corn Silk can be used to help alleviate symptoms that go along with the following conditions:bedwetting, cystitis, prostatitis, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, gout and hyperglycemia. It’s also a natural source of vitamin K and potassium.
Use about 1 tablespoon of chopped corn silk per cup of almost boiling water. Cover and let this steep for fifteen to twenty minutes or until cool enough to drink. Strain. Sweeten with raw honey to taste, if you wish. You can store leftovers in the refrigerator for two to three days.
Corn Silk can be used to treat many pets.
